Chelsea's Quick Move for Manu Koné: Midfield Rebuild
Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is moving quickly, and it now has a clear centrepiece: Manu Koné.
The London club have agreed personal terms with the AS Roma midfielder and lodged a formal bid, a move that could unlock Enzo Fernández’s record-breaking switch to Manchester City.

Chelsea’s stance on Fernández has been consistent. They will sell, but only on their terms. Two conditions, no compromise: a £120m fee and a replacement lined up.
The first part is straightforward. Manchester City are prepared to go that high. At £120m, Fernández would become City’s most expensive signing and the costliest midfielder in football history. The second part is where Chelsea have been working furiously.
Two names emerged as serious candidates in recent days: Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Manu Koné. The focus has now narrowed.
According to FootballTransfers, Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Koné and are pushing to complete the deal before the window shuts. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, confirming that Chelsea have made official contact with Roma and that talks between the clubs are ongoing over the 25-year-old.
The interest is no longer theoretical. It is active, direct and serious.
The bid on the table
Italian reporter Nico Schira revealed that Chelsea have tabled an offer worth €65m (around £56m) for Koné. His information also underlined the main obstacle: Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini considers the midfielder “non-transferable”.
That word usually ends negotiations. This time, it might just raise the stakes.
Schira added that the decision now rests with the player and Roma owner Dan Friedkin. If Koné pushes for the move and Friedkin sees value in cashing in, Roma’s resistance could crack.
Gianluca Di Marzio then added another layer. He described the deal between Chelsea and Roma as “advanced”, but suggested the fee is lower than Schira’s figure, citing a package worth £52m. The message, though, was clear: this is no longer an early-stage enquiry. It is a live negotiation, edging forward.
The domino effect for Enzo and City
All of this leads back to Fernández.
The Argentine is keen to join Manchester City and is waiting for the green light. Chelsea are open to selling once they have a replacement through the door and the £120m valuation met. Koné’s move would tick the first box. City’s money would take care of the second.
Roma, for now, are reluctant to lose a key midfielder. Gasperini wants to keep him. The club hierarchy and the player himself will decide whether Chelsea’s proposal is too big to ignore.
If they say yes, the dominoes fall. Koné to Chelsea. Fernández to City. A new record fee for a midfielder. And a transfer window that suddenly looks very different for two clubs with ambitions at the very top of European football.
