Chelsea Open to Manchester City Offers for Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea are ready to listen to offers from Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez – but only on their terms, and only if they can strengthen before the window slams shut.
No formal talks have taken place between the clubs yet, yet the situation moved into sharper focus on Thursday night when Fernandez was left out of the squad for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win over Luton. In a market where every omission is a signal, this one rang loud.
City circle as Chelsea weigh up a reshuffle
Manchester City’s interest has not gone away, even though they allowed Chelsea’s August 14 deadline to pass without a bid. By that date, Chelsea had an agreement with Fernandez’s camp that he could leave for £120m. The offer never came. Now the landscape is more complicated.
Chelsea want to be sure they can upgrade and rebalance their midfield before they cash in. They are looking hard at Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as potential incomings. Both clubs, though, are digging in and treating those players as unsellable.
City know those names well. Scott is also on their list, along with Roma midfielder Manu Kone, as they scramble to rebuild a central unit that has been stripped in a matter of weeks.
Rodri’s move to Barcelona earlier this month ripped out the spine of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. Nico Gonzalez has joined Newcastle in a deal worth up to £50m, Tijjani Reijnders has gone to Al Qadsiah for £51m, and Bernardo Silva walked away at the end of his contract before signing for Real Madrid. That is a core, gone.
The response has been typically aggressive. City have just completed an £86m move for Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, a world-record fee for a teenager, and last month they spent £116m to prise England international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Even with those two through the door, the need for another high-end midfielder remains. Fernandez fits that profile.
Alonso’s call on Fernandez
Against that backdrop, Enzo Fernandez sat out the Luton tie. Xabi Alonso insisted the decision was purely tactical.
“It was just because of the game,” Alonso said afterwards. “We have other players who need minutes.”
He revealed he made the call in the afternoon, stressing there was no disciplinary issue, no fall-out. “Enzo is a good professional. He’s training well and I have nothing to say about this. It was just decisions that we have to take thinking about the game that we were playing tonight. We will see for Sunday.”
The line is clear: Alonso wants options open going into Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton. Whether Fernandez is still central to his plans by the end of the window is far less clear.
Martinez deal raises stakes in Chelsea goal
While Fernandez’s future hangs in the balance, Chelsea have moved decisively in another area. They have agreed a £7.5m deal with Aston Villa to sign Emi Martinez, a transfer that instantly throws the goalkeeping hierarchy at Stamford Bridge into question.
Chelsea had been weighing up a late move for Martinez after Robert Sanchez came under fire for an error in Monday’s win at Fulham. That mistake sharpened scrutiny on a position that already felt fragile.
Martinez, for his part, needed a fresh start once Villa brought in Zion Suzuki from Parma for close to £30m. Juventus had looked at the Argentina international but turned instead to Guglielmo Vicario from Spurs. Chelsea have now stepped into that gap.
The knock-on effect will be brutal for someone. Sanchez and Mike Penders both face an uncertain few days. Penders started the Carabao Cup tie against Luton, with Sanchez having played at Fulham, but Martinez’s arrival will change the equation fast.
Chelsea are reshaping their spine at speed. City, stripped of their old midfield guard, are doing the same. The only question now is whether Enzo Fernandez becomes the next big piece to move in a window already defined by upheaval.
