Chelsea Completes Loan Deal for Ahanor to Crystal Palace
Chelsea have completed a complex deal for teenage defender Ahanor, sending him straight out on loan to Crystal Palace as part of a long-term plan that will not see him arrive at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2027.
Standard Sport revealed last week that Chelsea had struck an agreement for the 18-year-old, settled personal terms and cleared the way for him to travel to London for a medical. The structure is now clear: Ahanor will officially join Palace on loan from Atalanta, with his Chelsea move already locked in for three years’ time.
It is an unusual route, shaped by the relationship between the two London clubs. Chelsea have already sent Axel Disasi to Selhurst Park on a season-long loan, a deal that carries no option or obligation to buy. With Disasi already in south London, Palace will now also be the staging ground for Ahanor’s Premier League education.
For Palace, it is a coup. Ahanor comes through the Genoa academy, has already broken into the Italy senior set-up and has two caps to his name after making his international debut earlier this year. At club level he played 28 times in Serie A for Atalanta last season and tasted the Champions League for the first time in September, a rapid rise that has not gone unnoticed across Europe.
Chelsea believe the next phase of that rise is best served across the capital. Palace get a ready-made defensive talent with top-flight and European experience; Chelsea secure a long-term asset without crowding an already congested squad.
Their recruitment drive does not stop there. The Blues remain keen on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are actively exploring a move for the 22-year-old. His name has moved higher up the list as uncertainty grows around Enzo Fernandez, who has now missed two successive Chelsea matches amid strong interest from Manchester City.
Fernandez was absent again for the wild 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend. Asked to explain the decision, head coach Xabi Alonso was blunt about his priorities. “We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game,” he said.
Chelsea’s message is clear: the rebuild will continue on their terms. Ahanor’s delayed arrival, Disasi’s short-term switch and the pursuit of Camara all point to a club trying to lock down the next core of its squad while demanding absolute commitment from the current one.
