Cavan GAA Investigates Kitchen Fire at Kingspan Breffni Park
Cavan GAA has launched an investigation after a fire broke out in the kitchen area of Kingspan Breffni Park in the early hours of Friday morning, leaving the county’s flagship ground without power or water and out of action for the weekend.
The blaze, which occurred after midnight, drew a response from the fire brigade, who attended the stadium to extinguish the flames. No one was present at the ground at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
Early indications are that the damage has been largely contained to the kitchen section of the stadium. Assessors spent today examining both the extent of the destruction and the root cause of the fire, with the venue’s basic services badly hit in the process.
Kingspan Breffni Park, the heartbeat of football in the county, had hosted Crosserlough’s win over Laragh in the Cavan senior club football championship on Thursday night, only hours before the incident.
The timing could hardly be worse from a fixtures point of view. A full slate of SFC ties had been scheduled for the venue this weekend:
- Ramor v Ballyhaise,
- Arva v Cavan Gaels,
- Cuchlainns v Kingscourt,
- Castlerahan v Gowna,
- Killygarry v Mullahoran.
All of those games will now be switched to alternative grounds, forcing a rapid reshuffle of plans for clubs, players, and supporters.
In a statement, Cavan GAA confirmed the immediate impact on the stadium and the programme of matches.
“Due to a major incident at Kingspan Breffni overnight, the venue is out of commission for the weekend.
“Thankfully nobody was injured but currently no power or water in the stadium. Further details will be shared once the full extent of the damage has been assessed. Thank you for your understanding.”
