Michael Carrick is just about the last man in football you’d expect to hold court on transfer gossip. Quiet, measured, almost allergic to noise, the Manchester United head coach prefers the training pitch to the rumour mill.
He will not get that luxury for long.
With Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford both swirling around the headlines, Carrick’s pre-Ipswich press conference is set to be dominated by everything but Sunday’s game at Old Trafford.
Rashford noise, Rashford reality
Rashford’s name is back in the rumour cycle, this time linked with Fenerbahce. The story has flickered all week, but inside the club the stance has barely shifted an inch.
For the past month, the consistent message from every side has been simple: Rashford is expected to stay at United this season. That remains the situation now.
The timing helps him. In last week’s defeat at Hull City, Rashford came off the bench at half-time and offered something close to his sharper self. He was one of United’s better performers on a poor night, a rare bright thread in a frayed display.
That cameo has nudged the internal debate. There is now a realistic chance he starts against Ipswich on Sunday, back under the Old Trafford lights with something to prove and, crucially, something still to offer.
Zirkzee and the Italian queue
Zirkzee’s story feels different.
The Netherlands forward has been on the radar of several Serie A clubs all summer. Fiorentina have now stepped forward with a concrete idea: a loan move.
United are not especially keen on that version of the deal. Their preference is clear — a permanent sale, or at the very least a loan that comes with an obligation to buy. A clean decision, not a temporary fix.
The question now is whether Fiorentina, or any of the other Italian sides who have tracked Zirkzee, are prepared to turn interest into something more serious. The market is moving, slowly, and United know they cannot sit on the fence with squad places and wage slots at a premium.
Carrick in the crosshairs
Carrick will be asked about all of it. He always is, even if transfer talk sits somewhere near the bottom of his to-do list.
He will try to steer the conversation back to Ipswich, to Rashford’s form rather than his future, to Zirkzee’s development rather than his destination. But with the window alive and the season edging into view, United’s plans are already being tested.
Rashford looks set to stay and fight. Zirkzee stands at a crossroads, with Italy watching closely.
Carrick may not enjoy the theatre of it all. He does not get to opt out of it.
