Bruno Fernandes vs Erling Haaland: Gameweek 2 Captaincy Decision

Erling Haaland still sits on top of the Fantasy Premier League mountain, but Gameweek 2 offers a rare and genuine temptation to look elsewhere. The numbers, the fixture, the venue – they all point in one direction.

Haaland (£15.5m) opens the Gameweek on Friday night at Selhurst Park, where Manchester City face Crystal Palace. The Norwegian was the standout away performer in 2025/26, the top-scoring player on the road. Managers know the drill by now: you give him the armband and look away.

They did exactly that in Gameweek 1. 4.38 million of them, to be precise.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) was a distant second in the captaincy stakes, backed by 1.48 million managers. Between them, they carried ownership of 67.9% (Haaland) and 48.5% (Fernandes).

Both returned 2 points. Both blanked. Both frustrated.

That stalemate opens the door to a proper debate.

A look back at 2025/26 swings it sharply towards the Manchester United playmaker. At home last season, Fernandes was relentless. He produced eight double-figure hauls at Old Trafford – double Haaland’s four away from home.

The reliability gap is even starker. Fernandes blanked in only three of his 17 home appearances. Haaland, away from the Etihad, failed to deliver in seven of 18.

If you’re ever going to step away from Haaland, this is the kind of week you do it.

The form players crashing the party

While the two heavyweights stumbled out of the blocks, others sprinted.

Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all exploded in Gameweek 1, each delivering a double-figure haul.

Odegaard, operating in the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz (£7.0m), scored and took 11 points as Arsenal swept aside Coventry City. Now he heads to an Aston Villa side still reeling from a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Villa Park can be hostile, but that Brighton scoreline leaves questions hanging over Unai Emery’s defence.

Palmer and Joao Pedro, meanwhile, wasted no time announcing themselves for Chelsea in 2026/27. Both produced a goal and an assist in the win at Fulham, immediately justifying their price tags and pre-season hype.

This week, like Fernandes, they get home comforts. Chelsea welcome Brighton, a fixture that promises space, chances and attacking returns if Mauricio Pochettino’s side maintain their early rhythm.

These are not fringe punts. They are live captaincy options on form, with strong fixtures, in attacking roles.

So who gets the armband?

Strip away the fear of going without Haaland and the logic is blunt.

Fernandes has the numbers. He has the fixture. He has the stadium.

His 2025/26 home record is too strong to ignore, and Ipswich at Old Trafford looks tailor-made for another heavy haul. On balance, he has to be backed to outscore Haaland in Gameweek 2.

Behind him, Odegaard and Palmer stand out as the next best bets. The Norwegian edges it for third place on fixture difficulty, with a wounded Aston Villa looking far less secure than Brighton.

Haaland will still be the most captained player. He almost always is. But this is Fantasy Premier League, not a loyalty test. The numbers say this is Bruno’s week.

The only question is whether managers are brave enough to listen.
