Bradley Barcola's Liverpool Start: A Stuttering Journey
Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool start was supposed to be a statement. Instead, it has turned into a stutter.
Three games, no goals, and now an untimely injury picked up an hour into a bruising Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid. For a 24-year-old winger arriving with expectation and a price tag, the early chapters of his Anfield story have been harshly written.
The setback has already ruled him out of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Tottenham. On the eve of the tie, Andoni Iraola drew a clear line under any hopes of a quick return.
“He is not ready to train with the team yet. He is training on his own, but he has started to touch the ball. We want him back as soon as possible,” Iraola said, speaking to Foot Mercato.
The message carried a hint of optimism, but no false promises. Barcola is back with the ball, yet still far from the rhythm and intensity Liverpool demand from their wide players. The club will not rush him.
“He still has some time to recover, and it will take a while,” Iraola added. “With all these long-term injuries, I think (Giovanni) Leoni has a slight edge over him.”
That last line matters. It underlines the reality of elite squads: while one signing pauses, another player edges ahead. Opportunities do not wait, even for marquee arrivals.
For Barcola, the challenge is now as much mental as physical. A new league, a new dressing room, and a stop-start opening month are hardly the smooth runway he would have imagined. Yet Liverpool have seen this script before with talented attackers needing time, patience, and a clean bill of health before they truly ignite.
For now, the Frenchman works alone, rebuilding fitness on the training pitches, while the team moves on without him. The real question is simple: when he is finally ready, how different will the landscape look – and how quickly can he change it?
