Bradley Barcola: Liverpool's New Champions League Signing
Bradley Barcola has barely unpacked his bags, but Liverpool are already braced to unleash their new Champions League winner.
The French forward completed his move from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday, slipped straight into training with his new teammates, and is expected to be in the squad when the Reds open their Premier League campaign at Portman Road on Friday night.
A priority signing with a winner’s pedigree
For head coach Andoni Iraola, this was the deal that had to get done.
“We are very happy with Bradley. It was our priority, let's say, to sign a very, very good player in that position,” he told reporters on Thursday morning, underlining just how central Barcola is to Liverpool’s plans.
Barcola arrives with serious pedigree: a two-time Champions League winner, still young, but already hardened by nights at the sharp end of Europe. What impressed Iraola most, though, was not the medal collection.
“I think he has come also with the right mentality. I've liked from him that he wanted Liverpool a lot. He just wanted to come here and I think that's a good first sign,” he said.
That hunger matters. Liverpool are not just buying a résumé; they are bringing in a player eager to graft for a new project.
“Being the player that he is and the things that he has won recently, I think he has come also with the willingness to help us. I'm very happy with him.”
Ready for Portman Road?
Barcola has already joined full sessions at the training ground and, fitness permitting, will be available against Ipswich Town.
“He trained well with us. If everything goes well in today's training also, he will definitely be available for tomorrow, yes,” Iraola confirmed.
The only real question now is how quickly Liverpool throw him into the starting XI.
Asked directly if Barcola is ready to start, Iraola paused on the dilemma every manager faces with a marquee arrival who lacks match rhythm but oozes quality.
“I see him in a good place. He has trained with us in three trainings. It's true that he hasn't had minutes in pre-season but he has been training normal with the group. Then it's a decision we have to make.
“I think he's in a good place but we also have to consider that he hasn't had the minutes in the pre-season games.”
So the stage is set. A new signing with elite credentials, a manager openly delighted to have him, and a Premier League opener waiting under the lights. How quickly Barcola turns desire and reputation into decisive performances in red will shape more than just Liverpool’s first night of the season.
