Bernard Dunne Returns to Irish Leaving Cert Exam

Bernard Dunne has faced world champions under the lights. Last week, he faced something very different: the Irish Leaving Cert exam.

At 46, the former world champion boxer went back to sit the Irish paper, returning to the one subject that had beaten him as a teenager. Speaking on RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland about Katie Taylor’s proposed Croke Park fight, Dunne was lauding another trailblazer when the conversation turned unexpectedly to his own unfinished business.

Taylor, he said, stands as a role model for generations of athletes to come, a fighter whose influence stretches far beyond the ring. Then came the congratulations from the presenter – not for a title, not for a coaching role, but for completing his Irish exam.

Dunne smiled at the comparison between the classroom and the canvas.

“It was the only subject I failed in my Leaving Cert,” he admitted, before delivering the kind of line only a boxer could. “It was nearly as bad as doing the world title fight, to be honest.”

That failure clearly never left him. Decades after lifting a world belt, he still felt the sting of a mark on a school report.

“I needed to put that right,” he said. So he did. In typically uncompromising fashion.

At 46, with just a week to go before the exam, Dunne decided he would step back into the ring with Irish. No long build-up, no carefully managed camp. Just a late call and the determination that carried him through countless rounds in his career.

“I decided, a week before the exam, that I was going to do it,” he explained.

He leaned again on boxing language to describe the challenge, joking that the paper threw a few awkward shots his way.

“Thankfully, we were able to survive a couple of low blows and get through it.”

For a fighter who once chased belts around the world, it was a different kind of victory. No roar of the crowd, no walk to the ring, just a man in his mid-forties settling a score with his past – and proving that, even long after the final bell, there is always another test worth taking.
