Basil Tuma Named in Malta's Provisional Squad for International Fixtures
Basil Tuma’s remarkable rise continued on Monday as the Aldershot Town winger was named in Malta’s provisional 29-man squad for their upcoming international fixtures.
The 21-year-old only arrived at the EBB Stadium in the summer, signing from Reading, but has wasted no time making an impression. Eight appearances into his Aldershot career, he has helped drive the Shots into eighth place with 15 points, adding pace and direct running to their attack and catching the eye far beyond the National League.
From Uganda roots to Maltese colours
Tuma’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Born in Uganda, he first pulled on his home country’s colours at the 2020 CECAFA Under-17 Championship, a stage that hinted at his potential but gave little indication of the international crossroads to come.
Two years later, in September 2022, Malta came calling. He switched allegiance at youth level, stepping into the Malta Under-19 set-up and beginning a new chapter with a different flag on his chest.
The senior breakthrough followed. In October 2024, Tuma made his Malta debut, introduced at half-time and immediately changing the rhythm of the game. His fearless running won a penalty, underlining exactly why the national coaches had fast-tracked him. Since that first appearance, he has collected seven further caps, establishing himself as a regular presence in the squad before his move to Aldershot.
Nations League test ahead
Now comes another test: a demanding run of UEFA Nations League fixtures over the next two weeks that will shape Malta’s campaign.
They open with a trip to Andorra on 24 September, a match that will set the tone for the window. Three days later, on 27 September, Malta return home to host Liechtenstein in a friendly, a chance to fine-tune and rotate before the competitive games tighten again.
Gibraltar then visit Malta on 1 October in another Nations League tie, before the reverse fixture against Andorra on 4 October rounds off the schedule.
For Tuma, every minute in this window carries weight. It is an opportunity to cement his place in the Malta setup, to turn promise into permanence, and to carry his early-season form for Aldershot onto the international stage.
