Bartina Koeman, Wife of Ronald Koeman, Dies at 65
Bartina Koeman, wife and long-time partner of former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, has died at the age of 65.
The news, shared by Koeman on Instagram, closes a chapter that has run alongside some of Dutch football’s greatest modern moments and most demanding pressures.
A long illness, faced in public
Bartina was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She recovered, only for the disease to return in 2018. In 2023, during Koeman’s second spell in charge of the Dutch national team, doctors confirmed chronic breast cancer.
Koeman spoke openly about her condition on a television talk show in December 2025, explaining that treatments had been effective after metastases were discovered the previous year. Even as the illness advanced, the couple remained a visible, composed presence around the national side, their private struggle running parallel to a very public job.
The family’s statement, posted on Instagram, carried the weight of that journey.
"With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother," the Koeman family wrote, paying tribute to the woman who had been at the centre of their lives.
They have three children together, including goalkeeper Ronald Koeman junior of Eredivisie club Telstar. The family recently welcomed a fourth grandchild, a reminder of the growing generation Bartina leaves behind.
Strength behind the touchline
Ronald Koeman, now 63, stepped down as national team manager after the World Cup staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. When he explained that decision, he made a point of underlining how much his wife had carried him through his career’s most demanding years.
"My wife Bartina has, despite her own illness process, supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as national coach. That testifies to an incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words," Koeman said.
Those words cut to the heart of her role in Dutch football life. She did not score the goals, lift the trophies or front the press conferences, but she stood just off stage through it all: the European nights, the pressure of tournaments, the scrutiny that follows every decision at the top of the game.
More than “the manager’s wife”
Bartina Koeman became a familiar figure in Dutch sports culture after marrying Ronald in 1985, during his time at Ajax. As his playing career took him through PSV, FC Barcelona and Feyenoord, and later into management across Europe and with the national team, she remained a constant, visible presence.
She was not content to be known only through football. Bartina built her own path as an entrepreneur, launching a cosmetic and skincare line and carving out a professional identity away from the dugout and the stadium floodlights. In a football world that often reduces partners to the background, she insisted on more.
Yet her influence on Koeman’s career is impossible to separate from his achievements.
