Cleared only recently of charges related to the non-consensual distribution of an explicit video, the 23-year-old defender now finds himself in fresh trouble at the Santiago Bernabéu. This time, there is no courtroom drama, no legal ambiguity. There is a conviction.
The Spanish club moved swiftly after Asencio was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, a serious traffic offence that brought an eight-month driving licence suspension and a €14,400 fine. José Mourinho has never been one to dodge a difficult subject. Faced with questions about Asencio’s off-field behaviour, the Portuguese head coach chose clarity over diplomacy.

He pushed the point further. “Everything you do outside your professional area continues to reflect on Real Madrid, continues to affect the prestige of a club that is untouchable. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something different.”
That last line hangs in the air. Accumulated mistakes. For a young defender still trying to carve out a long-term place in the squad, it is a brutal assessment of where he stands.
Yet Mourinho’s message was not purely punitive. Just as the criticism sharpened, he pivoted to the player he sees every day inside Valdebebas, and the picture there is very different.
“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho admitted. “We talked about things from the past. Since I arrived, I haven’t spoken about situations outside Valdebebas because in Valdebebas, he is an exemplary professional.
“When he was well, no one trained more or better than him. Now that he has been injured for weeks, he is the first to arrive, the last to leave, showing extreme dedication to his recovery.”
It is a striking contrast: a player Mourinho clearly values for his attitude on the training ground, yet one whose judgement away from it is dragging him towards the edge.
For now, Asencio’s battles are fought off the pitch. Physically, he remains sidelined by an ongoing muscle problem and has not played a single minute for Real Madrid this season. His days are filled with rehab sessions and recovery work, not match preparation.
Away from the gym and treatment room, another process is unfolding. The club’s hierarchy will decide the internal punishment for his drink-driving conviction, weighing his professionalism at Valdebebas against the damage done to the club’s image.
