Arsenal have moved decisively in the youth market again, securing the signing of highly rated Crystal Palace striker Mylo Bernard on a scholarship deal with professional terms already agreed.

The 16-year-old joins as part of the club’s 2026/27 scholarship intake, with Arsenal confirming that a pre-contract for his first professional contract is in place and will activate when he turns 17.

This is not a speculative punt. Bernard arrives with serious numbers behind him.

A ruthless finisher from Palace’s ranks

Arsenal’s announcement underlined just how productive Bernard has been in south London. The forward hit more than 40 goals for the Palace academy last season, a haul that included six strikes in the u18 Premier League while playing above his age group.

That kind of return always attracts attention. Doing it while stepping up an age bracket tends to fast-track a player onto big clubs’ radars.

Bernard has already carried that form onto the international stage. For England u16s, he has scored four goals and provided two assists in eight appearances, a healthy output that backs up the impression of a penalty-box predator with an eye for goal and a calm head in front of it.

For Arsenal, it is another bet on a young, mobile centre-forward who can grow with the club’s evolving style. For Bernard, it is a jump into one of Europe’s most competitive academy environments.

Compensation and the next battle: Vincent Joseph

Bernard’s contract at Crystal Palace had expired this summer, but his age meant he could not simply walk away as a free agent. Arsenal had to strike a compensation agreement with Palace to complete the transfer, a familiar process in the academy market where clubs guard their best prospects closely.

The same issue now looms over another potential recruit.

Arsenal are believed to be closing in on the signing of Vincent Joseph from Liverpool. Like Bernard, Joseph saw his deal with his previous club run down at the end of the season. Like Bernard, he cannot move without a compensation fee being settled.

This time, there is no agreement yet. With Arsenal and Liverpool unable so far to find common ground on a figure, the Joseph deal is set to go to a tribunal, where an independent panel will decide the fee based on his age, development, and potential.

For now, Bernard is through the door, his path to a professional contract already mapped out. The numbers he posted at Palace demand attention. The question now is simple: how quickly can he turn that promise into pressure on the next rung of Arsenal’s ladder?
