Arsenal’s move for Julian Alvarez has slipped from rumour into something far more serious. With the transfer window ticking towards its close and Barcelona effectively locked out of the race, the path is suddenly clear. If Alvarez walks away from Atletico Madrid, there is only one door left open.

All summer, Alvarez has pushed for Barcelona. That has been the line from his camp: the dream, the priority, the only destination he wanted. He doubled down, making it personal and long term: as long as he is in charge, Barcelona will not get Alvarez.

“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”

That is not a stance for a week. It is a declaration for this window and beyond.

Arsenal wait in the shadows

Into that chaos steps Arsenal. Quietly. Patiently. But not passively.

Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has been consistent all week: Arsenal are in this. Not as casual observers, but as a club with a clear plan and the financial means to act.

“I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

This is not just a case of “if something happens, we’ll see.” According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico Madrid they are ready to do business and try to reach an agreement if Alvarez gives the green light.

The recent sale of Gabriel Martinelli, expected to bring in between £50m and £60m, has changed the landscape in north London. That fee, on top of other income generated in recent months, has opened up room for a major attacking signing. Alvarez fits the profile and the price bracket.

So Arsenal wait. But they also talk. They stay in the background out of respect for the player, his family and his agents, yet remain active in conversations with Atletico. Romano underlined how clear Atletico’s stance has become. Gil Marin’s public comments after the Champions League draw were not aimed only at Barcelona; they were a signal to everyone else.

“So not just for this transfer window, he said as long as I will be the CEO. So that means not just this transfer window but also for the future the message is very strong,” Romano explained.

The line from Atletico is stark: there will be no deal with Barcelona, but if Alvarez does not want to stay in Madrid, they are open to finding a solution with another club. And they know exactly which club is ready.

“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go,” Romano said.

Atletico would prefer to keep him. They would like to reset, give Alvarez another chance, move on from the summer noise and continue together. But that preference is now secondary to the reality of the situation. If he insists on leaving, they will not stand in the way of a move to Arsenal.

One decision left for Alvarez

Up to now, Alvarez has held firm. Romano stressed that “until today, until tonight, until the recent hours,” the forward has repeated one thing: Barcelona. His dream, his choice, his demand.

Arsenal have not walked away. They have not tried to force the issue. They have simply stayed in position, waiting for the moment when the player and his camp accept that the Barcelona route is closed for as long as Gil Marin remains in power at Atletico.

And time is running out. Four or five days from the end of the window, one phone call can flip the market.

“If at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready,” Romano said. “So get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”

That is where this saga now sits. Atletico have drawn their line. Barcelona are shut out. Arsenal have money, a strategy and a clear invitation from Madrid to step in.
