Arsenal's Champions League Journey: No San Siro This Season

Arsenal now know exactly who could stand between them and a deep run in this season’s revamped Champions League – but one of Europe’s most iconic arenas is off the itinerary.

With the final round of Champions League qualifiers wrapped up in midweek, the full cast for the new League Phase is confirmed. Every potential opponent is now on the board for Arsenal as they step back into Europe as Premier League champions.

The draw is scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 17:00 BST. By UEFA’s timeline, the full fixture list – dates and kick-off times included – will land no later than Saturday, August 29. Supporters won’t be left refreshing in the dark: UEFA have said they will push out a notification on their social media channels shortly before the schedule drops.

This is the first season under the new League Phase format, and Arsenal’s status is clear. They go into Pot 1 as English champions. Under the new system, though, that label doesn’t carry the same protective weight it once did.

Pot 1 badge, same level of risk

The pots still exist, but the old comfort of a “good group” has gone. Regardless of which pot you’re in, the structure is identical: every club will face two teams from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, two from Pot 3 and two from Pot 4. One game at home, one away, in each case.

So Arsenal’s Pot 1 seeding is a mark of progress rather than a shield. The calibre of opposition remains high across the board.

There are, however, some familiar restrictions. Clubs from the same country cannot meet in the League Phase. For Mikel Arteta’s side, that means no early European clashes with Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa or Manchester United. Any all-English showdown will have to wait for the knockout rounds.

And then comes the twist that takes Milan off the map.

The rule that shuts the San Siro door

UEFA have introduced a new scheduling rule: no club can play the same League Phase fixture three seasons in a row.

For Arsenal, that detail matters. They travelled to face Inter Milan away in both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 campaigns. Under the new regulation, that specific fixture – Inter vs Arsenal at San Siro – is now blocked for 2026/27.

So Inter are not off the table. The tie is. Arsenal can still be paired with the Italian champions, but any meeting would have to be at the Emirates Stadium in the League Phase.

It’s a small line in UEFA’s rulebook, but a significant one for travelling supporters who might have been eyeing another trip to one of European football’s great cathedrals.

Who Arsenal could face

With the qualifiers complete, all of Arsenal’s potential opponents are set across the four pots. The Gunners know the framework: two from each pot, no English sides, and no repeat away date at Inter.

The names will come soon enough. The draw will sketch out the road ahead, the fixture list will dictate the rhythm of their season, and the Emirates will brace itself for eight very different European nights.

The only certainty now? Whatever awaits them, Arsenal’s Champions League journey this year will be mapped out without a single step taken on the worn grass of San Siro.
