Ajax have moved decisively to end Yves Bissouma’s limbo, handing the Mali international a long-term deal that runs until June 30, 2027 and planting him at the heart of their rebuild at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
His contract at Tottenham expired at the end of last season. For weeks, his future drifted in that uneasy space where a player with pedigree waits for a club with conviction. Ajax have now supplied both the platform and the vote of confidence: a three-year agreement, effective immediately, and a clear mandate to rediscover the form that once made him one of the Premier League’s most combative midfielders.

Bissouma’s final year in north London was a warning as much as a footnote. He featured just 11 times for Spurs, unable to convince successive coaches that he could be trusted over the course of a demanding campaign. The numbers tell only part of the story. His spell at Tottenham was repeatedly interrupted by disciplinary problems, most notably a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide.
Those episodes followed him. So did the questions.
He lands in Amsterdam with his answer already prepared: defiance mixed with ambition. This is a player who has tasted both acclaim at Brighton and scrutiny at Spurs, and he spoke like someone determined to tilt the narrative back in his favour.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” Bissouma said, framing the move not as a step down from England but as a step into history.
If the timing surprised some outside the club, it did not catch him off guard. The groundwork, he revealed, had been laid long before the announcement.
“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
That word – project – matters at Ajax. A club defined by its academy and its ideals has been searching for the right blend of youth and experience after a turbulent period. Bissouma, 28 and battle-tested in the Premier League, arrives as part enforcer, part guide.

He also knows exactly what kind of dressing room he is walking into. Ajax squads are rarely short of talent, but they are often light on scars. Bissouma wants to fill that gap.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.
That is the other side of this signing: the leadership layer. Ajax are not only buying tackles and interceptions; they are buying experience, someone who has navigated the pressure of the Premier League and the scrutiny that comes with missteps off the pitch.
Technical Director Jordi Cruijff pulled back the curtain on how long Ajax have been circling.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
No transfer fee, months of planning, a clear role. This is shrewd business if the player matches the vision.
For Bissouma, it is something sharper: a career hinge. From Tottenham’s fringes to Ajax’s core, he now steps into a league that will demand control, discipline and consistency.
